Purpose
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of an educational program on pregnancy and delivery including pregnancy related knowledge, newborn care knowledge, and postpartum care self-efficacy for married immigrant women. Methods A nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. The educational program was developed by though an educational need assessment of married immigrant women and an expert opinion. The program was provided for 3 weeks, once a week for two hours. The data were analyzed with SPSS program using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, χ2-test, Fisher's exact test, and t-test.Results The program significantly improved pregnancy related knowledge, newborn care knowledge, and postpartum care self-efficacy for the married immigrant women who participated in the program compared to the women who did not. Conclusion The results indicate that the educational program has an affirmative effect on pregnancy related knowledge, knowledge of newborn care, and postpartum care self-efficacy in these women. It is suggested, therefore, that the educational program be used to every married immigrant woman at the public health centers or delivery clinics help them to adjust to the childbearing and childrearing experience and this will ultimately enhance the quality of family life of married immigrant women in Korea.

										 Abstract PDF
Purpose
The purposes of this study were to identify the prevalence of postprandial hypotension (PPH) and risk factors for PPH in Korean elderly people. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with community dwelling and nursing home residents. The blood pressure of 162 adults aged 65 yr or older was measured before meal as a baseline and then at 15 min intervals from immediately after the meal through 90 min after the meal. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression with the SPSS WIN 14.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results The prevalence of PPH was 29% and the PPH occurred immediately after the meal continuously through 90 min after the meal. The biggest drop in systolic blood pressure occurred at 45 min after the meal. Risk factors for PPH were age, base line systolic blood pressure, and presence of cardiovascular disease. Conclusion To prevent side effects of PPH such as falls and syncope, nurses should provide careful management of PPH and prohibit activities until at least 90 min after a meal. We also recommend that risk of PPH should be included in fall prevention guidelines for elderly people.

										 Abstract PDF
Purpose
The purpose of this experimental study was to examine the values of a death education program developed to improve life satisfaction and attitude toward death in college students. Methods The death education program was developed and then used with 22 college students for 5 weeks, once a week for 150 min. Before and after the intervention, students responded a questionnaire developed to measure life satisfaction and attitude toward death. t-test, χ2-test, and paired t-test with the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results The death education program significantly improved life satisfaction but had no statistically significant effect on attitude toward death. There was a significant difference in life satisfaction between the experimental and control groups but not in attitude toward death. Conclusion Based on the above results, it is apparent that the death education program has an affirmative effect on life satisfaction in college students and some impact on attitude toward death. We suggest, therefore, that the death education program should be used with all human beings to help them recognize the values of themselves and their current lives and improve their satisfaction with life.

										 Abstract PDF
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to understand the level of functional health literacy and its influence on perceived health status in Korean older adults. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Daegu, Kyungpook and Busan province. A total of 103 older adults aged 65 yr or older were interviewed in person between July 1 to August 30, 2007.Results A high proportion of older adults were unable to read and understand written basic medical instructions. Only 40-50% were able to comprehend directions for taking medication four times a day or on an empty stomach. Only 11-38% were able to understand information regarding treatment procedure, informed consent, or educational material for elderly fall prevention. Individuals who were older, single, and had less education and income were more likely to have lower functional health literacy. After adjusting for sociodemographic variables, individuals with lower health literacy had poorly perceived health status. Conclusion Many Korean older adults have a very low level of fuctional literacy. Low health literacy was independently associated with poorly perceived health status.

										 Abstract PDF
Due to great concern about quality of care in nursing home, legislative in the US mandated development of LTC MDS. MDS, a standardized assessment database for nursing home residents, provides comprehensive, holistic assessment data for nurses and make it possible to identify nursing needs of residents. The purpose of this study is to assess the health status of nursing home residents in Missouri, America, and to stimulate international comparative research assessing the health status of the elderly. This study presented the age-specific prevalence of diseases, sex differences, and the relative prevalence of chronic diseases among nursing home residents using the Minimum Data Set in Missouri. In addition, the possibility of racial and regional differences in chronic diseases and its relationship to demographic factors were analyzed. The prevalence of diseases was, in general, higher in female elderly then males and increased with age in both sexes. The average number of diseases in the elderly, among 31 chronic diseases, was 3.43 in women and 3.25 in men. The most prevalent 5 diseases were hypertension (29.1%), congestive heart failure (26.1%), dementia (23.6%), arthritis (20.6%), and diabetes mellitus (17.7%). Sixty-eight percent of nursing home residents had at least one of the heart/circulation related diseases and 58. 4% had neurology related diseases. In conclusion, the usefulness and implication of LTC MDS to nursing can't be overemphasized. Korean nurses should prepare themselves for using it for nursing research and to answer nursing questions.
